Do you get cold hands in winter? Do you have an outside job where you can’t wear gloves? You’ve probably used hand warmers before. Most hand warmers are disposable and only endure one use. These reusable hand warmers are great because you can use them over and over again! They come in different colours and have cute words and drawings on them. Keep one in each pocket, and you’ll have toasty warm hands despite the cold.
Unlike disposable hand warmers, these hand warmers are reusable. They’re small plastic pouches with clear liquid and a small metal disc inside. To release the heat, flex the metal disc. Hey, presto! The liquid will turn to crystals that give off heat. The heat lasts about 45 minutes, or longer if you have it in your pocket. To reset the hand warmer, boil it in water for about 10 minutes, until the crystals turn into liquid again. You can boil several at once.
How does the hand warmer work? The liquid in the pouch is made up of water and sodium acetate. When you flex the little disc, it releases tiny bits of metal. These agitate the sodium acetate, an amazing chemical, causing a chain reaction. The sodium acetate becomes crystals that release the stored heat energy. It will heat up to 54°C! You can reverse the process by boiling the pouch until the liquid is clear again.
These reusable hand warmers are great for keeping the cold out during the winter. Numb hands aren’t fun! Keep one in each pocket in your jacket. Cold hands can also make arthritis pain worse, so keeping your hands warm will help. Many use hand warmers when they’re doing outdoor activities. Of course, you’ll need to be able to put your hands in your pocket at least some of the time. So skiing might not suit using them! But they can come in very handy when you’re hiking, bird-watching, or working outside. If you’re out and about and your shoes get wet, you could also use a couple of spare hand warmers to dry your shoes quicker.
As we mentioned above, most hand warmers are disposable. This means that once you use them, you have to throw them out. That’s not great for landfills. Of course, these reusable hand warmers come in a plastic pouch. But since you can use them over and over again, you won’t be contributing as much rubbish to the environment. They will last around 300 uses!
Many buy several hand warmers and give some to their friends. Do you have a friend who’s always got cold hands? Do you have a family member who works outside? They’re sure to appreciate your thoughtful gift. Some also use hand warmers to soothe aching muscles or sore joints. If the warmer will be in constant contact with your skin, we recommend you put a layer of cloth between your skin and the warmer. Putting it in a sock would be perfect.
